Official: Tripod/Lycos are NOT shutting down
Mood:  incredulous
Now Playing: The Stranglers
Topic: News

Howdy, Tripod Members.

Tripod and Lycos are NOT shutting down. Your free/paid sites are fine. It's Lycos UK/Tripod UK that have announced their shutdown. The UK company licensed the Lycos/Tripod name and some technology years ago, but has NOTHING to do with the original/core Lycos/Tripod that we run here in snowy Waltham, MA, USA.

(Yeah, I know it sounds a bit strange...just think of it like those step-cousins who share the same last name, but that you never talk to, and have no idea what they're up to.)

So, again, Tripod and Lycos aren't going anywhere. In fact, the team and I are working hard to get out some exciting new features and upgrades. We're in Alpha testing now, and should have something for you to see in late Feb./early March. Ditto for Lycos Domains, and the domains you may have bought through Tripod or Angelfire. All's fine there, new stuff coming soon.

If you happen to have a site on Tripod UK that's getting shutdown, feel free to FTP-down your contents from that site, save them to your desktop, and then upload them to your Tripod.com site here. While we don't necessarily support all of the same technologies as the UK version currently, just sit tight.

Thanks for your ongoing support of Tripod and Lycos here in the USA (and globally across the World Wide Web). We've been around a long time, thanks to you, and we intend to be around for a lot longer.

Thanks.

Jamie Riehle,

Director of Product Infrastructure/Tripod/Angelfire

Lycos, Inc.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks so much for your prompt address and for clearing that up. I think that placing this in the "Alert Section" would also assuage some fears and concerns. It is probably fair to say that you are getting inundated with emails.

I have 3 domains that I have previously purchased with Lycos and plan on purchasing more in the future. The sitebuilder is also a jewel and very user-friendly, IMHO. Furthermore, from 1 to 10, I rate you guys a solid 10.

Again, Thanks! Matt

No problem, Matt. We'll be getting an alert on Help shortly...trying to line folks up on a super snowy Sunday isn't a super fast operation. But, we'll have the info up shortly, and hopefully, that'll calm folks down, and resolve any concerns. Thanks for your support. Glad you're liking the service.

Cheers,

Jamie

Jamie, thanks for reassuring us all.

Good to see you have new features & upgrades planned. I remember speaking to Scott in a chat last October when he mentioned that private domain registration was a planned option (back then he thought it would only be about 4-6 weeks), so I've been sitting around waiting for it all this time. :)

If someone from the Lycos team could post heredetailing the changes when they have been made, I'm sure we'd all appreciate it.

P.S. Any chance of introducing a Lycos Domains member blog for domain-only members with no Tripod or Angelfire hosting? Just a suggestion...

Dear Anonymous. (If that's your real name :) - In October we *did* think that we'd have private reg out within 4-6 weeks. Then, however, we hit some 3rd party provider issues. They've finished their work, so we'll be getting back to integrating the private registration in Q1 of this year. Sooner than later, I hope, but we'll have to see what else pops-up that requires more immediate attention. Good thought on the Domains club. I'll ponder that. As for posting updates on releases, etc., given the fluid nature of our roadmap, and not knowing when something might pop-up to derail our best intentions, like a 3rd party provider not being ready, I'm generally hesitant to post hard dates for launches. But, that said, if we do announce a firm release date, and it looks like we're going to miss it, then, yes, we should make a posting. Good idea. I'll try to stay on top of that. Thanks for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jamie Riehle

As a UK user of your excellent hosting , and I mean excellent, I am very relieved that it is only the European operation that is shutting down it's hosting services. Having had nightmares with BT in the UK, I spent a very long time researching suitable space , and am delighted with Tripod.. truly, and along with the sitebuilder, a wonderful piece of kit, long may you and it remain.

These are strange and difficult times indeed.

With many thanks for your CONTINUED excellence.

Hi Jamie

Re concerns over discontinuation of Lycos email services.

I have received a request from Amazon, who hold my Lycos.com email address details on their records, asking me to consider changing my provider as they believe all Lycos services are shutting down on the 15th February (Their text below)

Dear Customer,

Greetings from Amazon.co.uk.

As you may already be aware, Lycos will deactivate their email service to customers from the 15th February 2009.
As a result, it will be necessary to update your Amazon account with a new email address so that you will continue
to receive order information, correspondence and offers from Amazon.co.uk.

As a security precaution, we ask that all participants change their e-mail address directly on our website.
This ensures that the person requesting the change knows the password that is associated with the account, thereby preventing any uninvited changes.

To change your e-mail address, please do the following:

1. Click on the 'Your Account' link at the top of any page.

2. Under 'Personal Information,' click 'Change your name,
e-mail address or password'.

3. Enter your *old* e-mail address and password to sign in.

4. On the next page, enter your *new* e-mail address in the space
provided and click 'Confirm'.

We will then send a message to your new e-mail address confirming the change.

Thank you for your attention to this email.

Warmest regards

Customer Service Department
Amazon.co.uk

Please note: This e-mail was sent from a notification-only address that cannot accept incoming e-mail. Please do not reply to this message.'

I have tried to contact Lycos Inc in the U.S. and left a message for Kathy O'Reilly to call , but to no avail so far. Can you confirm again, that I, as a UK user, with a Lycos.com free email account, are able to continue using the service for the forseeable future, and have no need to find an alternative provider?

Kind regards,

Les Sibthorpe

I wonder whether http://members.lycos.nl/WishingWellArt/ will then be shut down or not.

My phone number is 8436147782 and i need my username and password sent to me before I deploy for 13 months. I dont remember the username and password and if you need to call to validate me please do so. I have been calling lycos leaving messages and also trying to submit questions through the knowledge base but it has not been working.
